The history of the Mother’s Day that everyone should know

Published

mothers day

Mother’s Day occurs on different days each year, in 2018 we will celebrate it this weekend, on May 13th. The holiday began in the USA in 1914, but it was first introduced in 1908 by Anna Jarvis. On this day we usually congratulate our moms, thank them for their love and care and give flowers and various gifts.

We can remember that ancient Romans and Greeks had celebrations that honored mother goddesses but the clearest modern celebration resembling Mother’s Day in the Christian festival called “Mothering Sunday”. As far as the tradition in the USA we should remember Ann Reeves Jarvis who started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to teach women the skills of childcare. In 1668 Ann organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day” to unite together former Confederate and Union soldiers.

Julia Ward Howe, a suffragette, wrote a call to action for mothers to unite for peace that was called “Mother’s Day Proclamation” in 1870. This also contributed to the Mother’s Day as we know it today.

Officially, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, Anna Jarvis started the holiday in May 1908 in West Virginia after her mother’s death to honor her mother’s efforts and sacrifice. Anna started a campaign the goal of which was to put Mother’s Day into the calendar.

By 1912 the holiday was celebrated in many towns and states and in 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed a decree proclaiming the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day. Inevitably, with years the day became monetized as merchandisers tried to make as much as possible on its popularity selling flowers and cards. In the USA Mother’s Day is still one of the biggest occasions of consumer spending. Nevertheless, it is also a wonderful day when we can thank our mothers, the closest people to us, for everything they do for us and for all their sacrifices.

2019 New and Future Cars: Genesis G70

Genesis will attempt to snare its share of the compact luxury sport sedan pie with the launch of the 2019 G70, which is expected to start at around $33,000. The G70 shares much of its hardware with the Kia Stinger, including the engines—a 2.0-liter turbo-four good for 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 that makes 365 hp and 376 lb-ft. Both engines will be available with all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, but unlike the Stinger, the G70 will have a manual transmission as an option. Although the manual is limited to rear-drive, four-cylinder-powered variants, its availability is still a pleasant surprise.

“The 2019 Genesis G70 is the car we’ve been asking for,” wrote senior editor Aaron Gold after getting behind the wheel of a U.S.-spec G70 in Maine. “It’s luxurious, affordable, reasonably practical, great to drive, aggressively priced—and you can get it with a manual trans. Every time I review a car, I ask myself if I would spend my own money to buy one. In the case of the Genesis G70, the answer is an unqualified yes.”

Next up for Genesis is a production version of the GV80 concept, which made its debut at the 2017 New York auto show. It will give Genesis an all-important crossover that will serve as a showcase of the marque’s upscale direction and advanced powertrain capability. Expect it to arrive sometime in 2019 as a 2020 model.

On sale: August-September 2018
Base price: $35,000 (est)
